You’ll need:
Lay the fleece cut-side down (lock side up) on your surface. The natural “grid” of the locks should face up.
Hold sections by the tips and gently shake to dislodge loose hay, dirt, and second cuts.
Go lock by lock and remove burrs, twigs, or stubborn hay. A small comb or your fingers work well.
Look for tiny snippets (½" or less). These tangle easily—toss them in the waste pile.
Roll the fleece lock-side out (like a jelly roll) and place in a breathable bag (pillowcase, burlap, or cotton sheet). Avoid plastic bags—they trap moisture and encourage mold. If you choose to use plastic, add paper to wick away moisture.
Do not store in areas with temperature fluctuations, this can lead to mildew and mold. Best practice is to contact your mill and get it shipped right away. Stored fiber is potential income sitting in storage.
Please oh please, do not send us a fleece like the one in the picture!
